Get in the right mindset
Many people are put off by traveling because of the cost. But in fact, the average price of a month of traveling will cost you just as much as what you’d normally spend on your apartment, bills, and car. So realistically, it can happen! An around the world trip isn’t going to work if you’re not fully into it. You need to be focused on leaving everything behind and starting a brand new life traveling around the world. Get it into your head that this trip is attainable, and that’s the first step to achieving your dream.
Make a list of where you want to go
Okay, so you know you want to go on an around the world trip, but the world is huge. And with 196 countries and thousands of towns, it would take you decades to see everything. So before you make a start on your around the world trip, you need to make a list of all of the places you’d like to go and mark them out on a map. See where they’re near, how you could make a journey of it, and what you’d like to see in between. This way, you don’t miss out on the bits you really want to see.
Take your time
Plan your time effectively. Don’t arrange to have 5 days in Paris before moving on to Barcelona – because you never know; you may absolutely love it in Paris and want to spend 3 weeks there. When you are mapping out your destinations, aim to stay in one country or place for around one month to give you the right amount of time to explore everything it has to offer. You don’t have to stay there for a month, but at least you have the freedom to do as you please rather than being rushed.
Just like everything, traveling requires money, so you need to dedicate yourself to saving. Realistically, saving $100 a month isn’t going to get you very far. You need to save at least $500 a month until you work out how much you really need. Seasoned travelers normally spend about $1000 on accommodation, food, travel, and activities on their round the world trip; this will give you a basis for how much you’ll need and how long it will take you to save up. But you need to stick to it! Remember why you’re saving, and don’t let yourself slip.
Do the official business
As much as we wish it were, the world isn’t a free-for-all. You can’t just rock up to another country and stay for as long as you want. Many countries require visas to enter the country, and most of these are only available for certain lengths of time. Before you book anything, check the requirements of each country you wish to travel to, how long you can stay there, and how much it will cost you to apply for a visa (because they do cost a fair bit!). Otherwise, you may find your trip cut short – as you land yourself in jail.
